Blockstream published a formal Bitcoin Improvement Proposal for SHRINCS, a quantum-resistant signature scheme, on 27 August 2026. It matters because it is the first concrete plan to protect Bitcoin's private keys from a future quantum computer attack, a risk every holder eventually faces.
What actually happened
Blockstream Research's Jonas Nick called SHRINCS 'the first concrete proposal for a post-quantum signature scheme designed specifically for Bitcoin,' per Cointelegraph. The scheme has a minimum size of 548 bytes plus a 48-byte public key, growing to as much as 4,619 bytes, about nine times larger than Bitcoin's 64-byte Schnorr signatures. Under SegWit, those bytes sit in witness data at a quarter of normal cost, so Blockstream estimates Bitcoin could still run at 3 transactions per second with SHRINCS, near today's speed. Bitcoin traded at $79,661, up +1.33% over 24 hours, after ranging between $77,648 and $80,475. Trading volume hit $30.03 billion and market capitalisation stood at $1.60 trillion. US spot bitcoin ETFs logged an eight-day inflow streak worth $2.8 billion (USD), according to CoinDesk, putting August on pace for its best month since October 2025.
How we got here
Blockstream researchers Jonas Nick and Mikhail Kudinov first unveiled SHRINCS in December 2025, followed by an opcode proposal in May 2026. The scheme was tested on Blockstream's Liquid sidechain in March 2026, signing real transactions including a copy of the Bitcoin white paper. Blockstream co-founder Adam Back is known as a quantum skeptic who doubts the threat will materialize for decades, yet told Cointelegraph earlier this year that 'the safe thing' is to prepare well in advance. Rival NIST-approved schemes like SPHINCS+ and ML-DSA are far larger, dropping Bitcoin's throughput to 0.36 and 0.5 transactions per second respectively, one reason SHRINCS drew attention as a Bitcoin-native alternative.
Why this matters for you
For holders, SHRINCS remains unaudited and the BIP itself admits a security proof is still 'TODO,' so no wallet needs to act today. For builders, the proposal adds real complexity: SHRINCS is stateful, meaning devices must track used keys, and losing a device triggers a fallback transaction near 5,777 bytes to recover funds. Researcher Yoon Auh warned that every new consensus rule becomes 'a permanent maintenance obligation.' Separately, node operators running Core Lightning face a more immediate task: install a coming security update or restart nodes in offline mode to stay protected while payments are paused. Neither story moved Thursday's price action, but both shape what Bitcoin infrastructure looks like years from now.
The bigger question
If quantum computers eventually threaten Bitcoin's signatures, can a decentralized network agree on a single upgrade path fast enough, or will competing proposals such as SHRINCS, BIP-360 and BIP-361 split support until the risk becomes urgent? As one researcher put it, the binding constraint may be governance, not cryptography. Who decides, and how, before the clock runs out?
What to watch
Watch for Core Lightning's promised security update, still unscheduled as of 27 August 2026. Three trading sessions remain this month to confirm whether August becomes the best month for bitcoin ETF inflows since October 2025.
