ADNOC becomes the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier

Abu Dhabi just made one of the biggest AI moves of the year, and it came from the energy sector.

At the opening of ADIPEC 2026, H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, told the audience that the new partnership "will make ADNOC the world's first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier." The room answered with applause.

Sam Altman in Abu Dhabi

The announcement followed a meeting between His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. After the meeting, His Highness witnessed the signing of four agreements between Abu Dhabi entities and OpenAI, spanning government, energy and investment.

In energy, ADNOC, G42 (through its subsidiary Inception42) and OpenAI signed a landmark agreement that makes ADNOC the first company in the energy sector to deploy OpenAI's frontier technology. The system will run on OpenAI's GPT models using in-country infrastructure in the UAE.

"Abu Dhabi and the UAE are setting a bold, global standard for AI integration across both the public and private sectors," Sam Altman said.

What changes for energy

According to Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the partnership will transform ADNOC's field development, well management and commercial operations. The aim is to help engineers plan entire fields faster, with the goal of compressing months of planning into hours, and to connect decisions from production all the way to trading. Engineers and specialists stay in control, approving every decision.

Or, in his words: "From the moment that GPT was born, the world has asked what energy can do for AI. And now, together, we will find out what AI can do for energy."

A huge stage

ADIPEC 2026 runs from 2 to 5 November at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi and was expected to draw around 239,000 visitors from more than 170 countries, with over 2,250 exhibiting companies.

On the spot

bonuz founder Matthias Mende was at the opening ceremony at the Abu Dhabi Energy Centre and at ADNEC to cover the announcement. "Standing in that room, you could feel it. This is not a pilot or a press release. This is one of the world's biggest energy companies putting frontier AI into the core of how energy is produced and moved," he said.

Why it matters to us

bonuz is not part of this deal, and it is not about blockchain. But it is about the future we build in: the UAE positioning itself as a global home for applied AI, right next door to us. When our neighbours in Abu Dhabi move this fast, the whole region moves with them.

Frontier AI needs frontier problems. ADNOC has spent five decades solving them.
