Core Lightning confirmed on 26 August 2026 that AI-generated security reports found real vulnerabilities in its Bitcoin payment software, and it is preparing an emergency fix. The bug sits inside code that routes Lightning payments, so any operator who skips the update risks stalled channels.
What actually happened
Core Lightning, a widely used implementation for routing Bitcoin payments over the Lightning Network, said on X that several AI-flagged vulnerabilities are real and that developers and outside contributors spent 10 days confirming them and preparing fixes, according to Decrypt. The project urged operators to verify signatures and install the coming update 'promptly rather than eventually.' Operators who cannot upgrade immediately should restart nodes with the --offline flag rather than shutting them down, because a running node can still react if a counterparty force-closes a channel. Version 26.04 will no longer be supported; the next scheduled release, 26.09, arrives in late September 2026. Bitcoin traded at $79,337 as of 10:40 UTC on 28 August 2026, down -0.17% over 24 hours, having ranged between $79,031 and $81,282, per CoinGecko data.
How we got here
This is the third Bitcoin security scare tied to AI in three months. In July, hardware wallet maker Coinkite said an attacker likely used AI to find a weakness in Coldcard seed generation, a flaw linked to millions of dollars in stolen Bitcoin. Earlier in August, swap provider Boltz suspended its service after attackers found bugs faster than developers could patch them. The volunteer Bitcoin Red Team says AI-assisted review has produced 4,962 possible findings across 390 projects, rating 85 as critical. Bitcoin Red Team member Calle told Decrypt the group exists because it needs to get ahead of attackers as fast as possible.
