Robinhood Chain's batches failed to reach Ethereum for 14 minutes across an 18-minute stretch on Friday, with the longest single gap lasting 8 minutes 36 seconds, according to The Defiant. The outage happened in two separate gaps. Throughout it, Robinhood Chain kept producing blocks every 101 milliseconds, per The Defiant. Arbitrum pointed to congestion in Ethereum's blob market as the cause. That explanation fits the second gap in the timeline, but not the first, the same report noted.
How we got here
Ethereum's blob space, added in the Dencun upgrade, gives rollups a cheap lane to post transaction data for security and verification. Multiple rollups, including Base and Robinhood Chain, share that same limited lane. When one chain's activity jumps, it can push out data from others waiting in the same queue. Friday's episode is one of the first public cases where a named retail-facing chain, Robinhood Chain, saw its own posted data missed for minutes at a time because of another network's traffic.
