Leaked firmware images show the prescription lens system inside Meta's unreleased Project Phoenix headset, built with Zenni Optical. The pictures surfaced days before Meta Connect. This matters because a headset that fits your actual eyesight is not a toy you strap on for games. It is closer to a pair of glasses you could wear all day.
What actually happened
The images were found inside a Horizon OS firmware package called HorizonOS Prescription Lens, first spotted in August 2026 and updated in September, according to UploadVR. They show a slim headset with glasses-style nose pads, a detachable prescription lens insert, and a QR code scan step used to pair the lens to the device. Sensors sit on the sides and undersides of the temples. A cable runs from the left temple to a separate compute puck, offloading processing so the headset itself stays light, according to Road to VR. Meta has not confirmed a name, price, or release date. Meta Connect follows later in September 2026.
How we got here
Phoenix has circulated under three codenames, Phoenix, Stanley, and Loma, since a blurred setup video leaked in July 2026. That leak already showed independent lens spacing, removable nose clips, and built-in hand and eye tracking. Meta has since shuttered internal VR game studios and cancelled AAA titles in progress, redirecting its Reality Labs division toward AI wearables, including Meta Glasses. The company appears to be aiming Phoenix less at gamers and more at a general-purpose computer to rival Apple's Vision Pro, priced well above the Quest 3S. Prescription lenses fitted this precisely are new for a headset. Reading glasses have been ground to one person's eyes for centuries. A computer has not, until now.
